The Iroquois League consisted of people from five nations, namely, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. It was later called the Iroquois Confederacy. The Tuscarora people from the southeast were accepted as the sixth member of the league, and the league consisted of six nations after that.
What Is the Great Law of Peace?
The Iroquois confederacy is the oldest living league. This confederacy is almost 1000 years old. It is believed to be formed in the year 1142. The members of the Iroquois confederacy consider themselves as Haudenosaunee, which means, “people of the longhouse”. This is so because they lived in bark-covered mud houses that sheltered many people.
The great peacemaker (a prophet), along with the people of Iroquois, devised a plan to bring peace to the nations. They wandered to all the five nations of the Iroquois confederacy to share their idea of peace and why it is so important. By that time, the nations were not a league, but soon after, they became the league of nations.
There were different leaders of each nation, but there was one common cause, “peace” for which they came together and accepted the Iroquois confederacy constitution.

How Did The Iroquois 'Great Law Of Peace' Become The Constitution Of America?
When the leader of America expressed his concern over the colonists fighting with each other, he said, “we heartily recommend Union and good agreement between you, our brethren.” He then advised people to follow the great law of peace.
He also claimed that the Iroquois Confederacy was powerful and maybe the world's largest confederacy at that time. Further, he exclaimed that if they followed the footprints of their ancestors of Iroquois, they could gain strength against any enemy in the world.

Benjamin Franklin, the great leader of America, took notes and founded the important principles of the Iroquois confederacy constitution. Later in 1715, he wrote in a letter that they too must follow the Iroquois “Great Law of Peace”.
We have known about what it is but now let us light its principles, rules, and regulations. The great law of peace keeps forward the following democratic rules.

The Role of Women
It stated that women could choose or expel any candidate they wanted. This was not included in the US constitution because of which the leaders were criticized. Many people say they have just implemented the great law of peace, but they do not understand it.
